STEP 1 STUDY WORKFLOW

A Step 1 study plan for 30-minute blocks.

Use the changed interface as a planning constraint, then build short review and reset routines around each block.

Reviewed August 21, 2026

Start with the current interface facts

For Step 1 exams on or after May 14, 2026, the updated interface uses 14 blocks of 20 items with 30 minutes per block. The total remains 280 items and the 8-hour day is unchanged. Use those facts to rehearse your own pacing and break routine rather than assuming an older block format.

Build one repeatable block cycle

Before a block, choose one narrow objective and remove nonessential tabs or notifications. After it, record only the topic category, confidence level, and one study action. A short reset helps separate timing practice from the longer content review you can schedule later.

Review patterns, not recalled prompts

Use your results to identify broad study priorities such as a system, mechanism, or interpretation skill. Do not copy, store, or trade question text or explanations. Write your own brief learning note from independently selected public sources or your authorized materials.

PRACTICAL CHECKLIST

Use this as a study prompt.

  • Confirm your practice setting uses the current 30-minute block format.
  • Set one pacing target before each block and note it after the block.
  • Take a short planned reset instead of turning every block into a long review session.
  • Schedule a separate content-review window for recurring weak areas.
